Abstract
The National University of Colombia recognizes the problem in the subjects
that present high repetition in first semester students. In order to investigate
possible causes, a study is being carried out to determine if there are
socioeconomic factors of the students at the time of entering university that
affect performance.
For the year 2017 the population of students who studied Biochemistry
I, calculus, Molecular Biology and fundamental chemistry was analyzed,
analyzing variables such as age, type of admission and PBM (Basic Matriculation
Score) and its relationship with the grade obtained in the subjects
Age: 65% is in the range of 15 to 20 years, 25% of 21 to 25 years and 10%
of 26 and up. The youngest population has a lower percentage of repetition.
The type of admission in the University differentiates regular admission and
special admission, the former being close to 90% and the latter 10%. There
is evidence of a better performance of the students of regular admission.
PBM: on average 40%> 1-20, 35%> 21-40, 15%> 41-60 and 10%> 61-100. It
is concluded that there is greater repetition at older age, in special admission
students and in low socioeconomic factors.
The implementation of digital educational resources, the MOOCs
courses, is a proposal of solution are didactic strategies that the University is developing to improve the level of knowledge and performance of those
who take courses of high repetition.
