Resistencia a la resiliencia: experiencias de inmigrantes dentro del mercado laboral canadiense

Abstract

Canadá tiene una reputación mundial por recibir a personas de todo el mundo. La inmigración es la característica que define a este país y, entre los países del G8, este tiene las tasas de inmigración más altas. En medio de los desafíos que enfrenta Canadá hoy, como el aumento del envejecimiento de la población y la disminución de la tasa de natalidad, los inmigrantes juegan un papel vital en el crecimiento de la fuerza laboral de Canadá (Sakamoto et al. 2010). Aparentemente, la idea de migración está vinculada con la noción de un lugar lleno de oportunidades, paz, seguridad e igualdad de acceso a los recursos económicos y profesionales. Por esta razón, a través de un enfoque mixto este proyecto busca explorar la experiencia de integración de los inmigrantes en el Mercado Laboral Canadiense, profundizando en factores que incluyen, pero no se limitan al comportamiento de esta situación en las diferentes provincias del país, identificando las barreras y desafíos que ellos han tenido que enfrentar, y las comunidades, asociaciones y agencias creadas a lo largo de este proceso. Además, explorar la teoría de la Resiliencia y cómo los inmigrantes han desarrollado tales características. Muchos inmigrantes enfrentan obstáculos para encontrar empleo, mientras que otros pueden estar subempleados, de esa manera, la literatura sobre migración brinda información sobre el tipo de obstáculos que enfrentan los inmigrantes en el mercado laboral; sin embargo, hay poca información disponible sobre cómo los inmigrantes comprenden sus experiencias y cómo mitigan estas barreras. A pesar de todas las dificultades, sorprendentemente algunos inmigrantes se integran fácilmente, mientras que otros luchan por aprender las reglas y normas del nuevo país para participar con éxito en el mercado laboral.

Canada has a global reputation for welcoming people from across the globe. Immigration is the defining feature of this country, and among the G8 countries, it has the highest immigration rates. Amidst the challenges Canada faces today, such as increase in aging population and decrease in birth rate, immigrants play a vital role in the growth of Canada's labor force (Sakamoto et al. 2010). Apparently, the idea of migration is linked with the notion of a place full of opportunities, peace, security, and equal access to economic and career resources. For that reason, through a mixed approach, this project seeks to explore the integration experience of immigrants in the Canadian Labor Market, further examining factors including but not limited to the behavior of this situation in the different provinces of the country, identifying the barriers and challenges that they have had to face, and the communities, association and agencies created throughout this process. Besides, explore the Resilience theory and how immigrants have developed such characteristics. Many immigrants face hurdles in finding employment while others may be underemployed, in that way, the migration literature provides information about the kind of hurdles faced by immigrants in the labor market; nevertheless, there is little information available about how immigrants comprehend their experiences and how they mitigate these barriers. Despite having all the odds, surprisingly some immigrants integrate easily, while others struggle to learn rules and norms of the new country to successfully participate in the labor market.
