El mundo profano ha dejado una impronta de seguridad y credibilidad basada en el cuerpo público, cuerpo que se modela para la vida pública de la ciudad; el nuevo orden del cristianismo que se impondrá en el imperio bizantino aportará una concepción muy distante respecto de la antigüedad, se hablará del cuerpo en términos de sacrificio, pecado y culpa. Este cambio producido en la estética cristiana con respecto a la representación del cuerpo necesitó de un proceso muy largo para que los descendientes de las tradiciones paganas incorporaran los nuevos gustos frente al cuerpo sufriente.
