Relaciones de un bufón en la ruta de las especias: La novela histórica en Latinoamerica

Abstract

La relación de Juanillo, protagonista de Maluco, con los tripulantes, es excluyente; con los nativos, indiferente; con los capitanes, de adoración; con la Corona, de súplica. Cada una de las relaciones se basa en un momento histórico: el viaje de Magallanes a las islas Molucas, que se encuentra atravesado por el particular humor de un bufón del siglo XVI. Dentro de la novela histórica se pueden vislumbrar elementos que la caracterizan, como los lugares mencionados, las actitudes, formas de vida, manera de proceder, instituciones y personajes; todos pertenecientes a un periodo real dentro de un escrito ficticio pero histórico a la vez. Este artículo contiene esos elementos sobresalientes contados por un bufón y reafirmados por la historia.

The relationship of Juanillo, the main character of the novel Maluco, with the crew is one of exclusion; the one with the natives is marked by indifference; the one with the captains is one of worship; and the one with the Crown, one of supplication. These relationships are based on a historic event: the voyage of Magellan to the Moluccas, as seen from the perspective of a sixteenth century jester with a particular sense of humor. Typical elements of the historical novel such as places, attitudes, lifestyles, procedures, institutions and characters can be glimpsed in Maluco. They all belong to a real period existing within an account which although fictitious is also an historical one. This article contains some of the more memorable episodes as told by a jester and reaffirmed by history.
