Medellín: Algunos conceptos sobre la higiene

Abstract

Medellín en su paso de villa rural a ciudad moderna y metrópolis, ha variado considerablemente sus percepciones sobre la limpieza del cuerpo y principalmente sobre los hábitos de higiene. Por otro lado, la pluralidad cultural que converge en Medellín por décadas de migraciones del campo, ha enriquecido las características culturales frente a los comportamientos domésticos: ciudadanos, migrantes y habitantes de la calle han compartido por años el espacio de la ciudad y en ella han desarrollado un sin fin de similitudes y de diferencias. El espacio íntimo, la limpieza de esos espacios y la evacuación de desechos corporales son condicionantes para el concepto de limpieza arraigado desde la introducción de la modernidad a la ciudad de Medellín.

Medellin’s perceptions about body cleanliness and mainly about hygiene habits have changed considerably from the rural town to the modern city and metropolis. On the other hand, the cultural plurality that converges in Medellin through decades of migrations from the country has enriched the cultural characteristics with respect to the domestic behaviors: citizens, migrants and inhabitants of the street have shared the space of the city for many years and there they have developed endless similarities and differences. The intimate space, the cleanliness of those spaces and the disposal of body waste are determining factors for the concept of sanitation deeply-rooted from the beginning of modernity to Medellín city.
